What We Wear Matters: A quick guide to healthy fabrics

Most of us pay attention to the food we consume or the skincare products we use.

Hoewver, it seems that we rarely think about how our clothes affect our skin, too. The materials we wear daily have a major impact on our comfort, circulation, and even how our skin functions.

Ideal fabrics for healthy skin & circulation:

These fabrics are breathable, gentle, and allow for natural movement:

  • Organic cotton – Free from pesticides and chemicals, super soft and breathable. Great for sensitive skin.

  • Linen – Naturally cooling, antimicrobial, and moisture-wicking. Ideal for warm weather.

  • Hemp – Durable, breathable, and resistant to bacteria. Gets softer over time.

  • Bamboo (viscose) – Lightweight and naturally hypoallergenic. (Look for closed-loop processed versions.)

  • Tencel (Lyocell) – Made from wood pulp in an eco-friendly process; breathable, soft, and gentle on skin.

  • Wool (when natural and not scratchy) – Helps regulate temperature and absorb moisture.

Fabrics to avoid or limit:

These materials can trap heat, irritate skin, or reduce circulation:

  • Polyester – Traps heat and moisture, leading to clogged pores and skin irritation.

  • Nylon – Often used in activewear; not very breathable unless blended with other fibers.

  • Acrylic – Can cause itching and doesn't allow your skin to breathe.

  • Rayon (unless sustainably processed) – Often treated with chemicals that may cause skin sensitivity.

  • Tight or synthetic shapewear – Restricts lymph flow and circulation when worn too long.

  • Luon, Nulu, Luxtreme and Everlux - While not officially deemed toxic ( yet!) they do contaminate our planet with toxic chemicals like PFAS ( per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) also known as “forever chemicals” used in some water resistant and wicking fabrics. These chemicals are linked to health issues like cancer and reproductive problems.

To start building a non-toxic wardrobe, its important to focus on knowing materials, prioritizing natural fibers and opting for brands with ethical sustainable practices. Its a gradual change that can bring positive lasting health benefits.
